DEDICATION
This book is dedicated to the thirteen members of the family who lost their lives in World War II.
They are: Otis Andrew Carmichael (Carmichael line) who lost his life at the hands of the Japanese in the Philippine Islands in 19Ui; Robert B. Collier (Beck Line) who was killed in France with the Seventh Amy in 19^5; Philip Arthur Wilheit (White line) who died on New Brit¬ ain Island with the First Karine Division in 19h3; Dabney Wylton Sharp (Brown Line) who lost his life as a pilot over the North Sea returning to his base in England from a mission over Germany in 19h5: Harold Coppedge Evans (Andrews Line), Seaman First Class, lost his life on a British Oil Tanker out from Trinidad about 500 miles off the coast of South America in 19U2; Grover Connell Patrick, Jr., (Andrews Line) was killed in action in Africa as an engineer in 19h5; Willie Joe Tingle (Andrews Line) was killed in France with the Seventh Armored Division in 19UL; Lewis White Evans (White Line) was reported missing over the Pacific Ocean while serving in the United States Marine Corps in 19Wj: James Cook Huggins (Harkness Line) was killed in action in France in I9kh; Hugh Abner Yarbrough (White Line) was killed at Charleston, South Carolina, while on flight as an Air Force Pilot in 19UL-
Preston Baxter Brown (Brown Line) was killed in a railway accident at Schenectady, New York, while serving with the 25flth Field Artillery In 19L2; Chester Bryan Harris, Jr., (Harkness Line) was killed in a jeep accident near Gainesville, Georgia, while on duty with the United States Navy in 19li3; and Robert William Stewart (Andrews Line) died in an arrry hospital at Lowry Field, Denver, Colorado, while serving his country in 19U7.
In dedicating this family history to the memory of these thirteen who gave their lives for their country, we honor ourselves in honoring them. They did not die in vain but made a lasting contribution and left an immortal heritage to thei. .eccendants, and thus they will live forever in grateful memory.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
William Henry Beck, III, was born in Griffin, Georgia, on December 7, 1925, the only son of William H. Beck, Jr., and Sara tester Beck. He attended the public schools in Griffin until 19U2. At that time he moved to Alexandria, Virginia, with his family where his father was connected with the Judge Advocate General's Department in Washington, D. C. He attended and graduated from George Washington High School, Alexandria, Virginia, in 19U3- His father being ordered overseas in 1913, the family returned to make their home in Griffin and Bill enrolled in Griffin High School for post high school work. He graduated from Griffin High in 1911.
Young Beck attended the University of Georgia in the College of Liberal Arts from 1911 to 1916. He next attended West Georgia College in Carrollton, where, in 1917, he received his Terminal Diploma. Finally in 1950, he received a diploma in higher accounting from the Georgia- Alabama School of Commerce in Macon, Georgia.
His employment record has been varied - for a time he was employ¬ ed by the J. C. Penney Company in Griffin where he was a salesman, head of the Boys Wear Department, and later a stock room clerk. While attend¬ ing business school in Macon he was employed by the Dannenburg Company as salesman. For a short time, he was connected with the State Bank in Griffin.
On March 13, 1951, he became connected with the TTiomaston Mills, Griffin Division, Griffin, Georgia, in the Supply Parts Department and later he was transferred to the Weave Department, keeping production records, where he is now employed.
When a mere lad, young Bill, edited, mimeographed, and delivered a "Beck News", a news sheet, which he distributed throughout the city of Griffin. He was sports editor of the Spalding County Times from March, 1951 to November, 1952. He is an ardent football, baseball, and basketball fan, and a qualified baseball scorer.
While at the University, Bill was initiated into the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, as had been his father before him. Bill was treasurer of his Fraternity for two terms while at the University.
Bill was the founder and first president of the Phi Delta Hieta Alumni Club of Griffin, later becoming a secretary of the Club. He is a former member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce of Griffin and a member of the First Methodist Church.

FOREWORD
The author of this genealogy has devoted eleven and one-half years of intensive research in the preparation of this work. It has been a labor of love, in which the author has not spared himself. The various ramifications entering into this family history have extended into thirty two states and two foreign countries, and embraces more than one language from AD 571 to the present.
Voluminous correspondence with hundreds of persons, much of which was fruitless; visits to various cemeteries; to court records - deeds, wills, and other documents; family Bibles and records; all went into the making of this record.
Eight wars have furnished records in which one or more members of the clan participated - Revolution, War of 1812, War Between Hie States, Mexican, Spanish-American, World War I, World War II, and the Korean incident - and from Alfred the Great to the present.
William H. Beck, 111, has done a splendid job and deserves the appreciation of the many persons concerned with their forbears in preserving for posterity the records that otherwise would be forever lost.

PREFACE
The object of this TEXT is to acquaint the present, the older, and the new generations with this great family of ours.
This TEXT, A FAMILY GENEALOGY, is as authentic as possible for the author to make it. It is composed of fourteen family lines, nine of which are considered as major lines. The nine major lines are: Harkness, Carmichael, Lester, Greene, Andrews, Brown, White, Polhill, and Beck.
This family history is divided into three family groups. Group one is composed of the Reid, Baskin, Harkness, Carmichael, and Lester families. Group two is composed of the Andrews, Harkness, Carmichael, and Beck families. Group three is composed of the Bruce-Cax, Greene, Brown, White, Beck, and Daniel families.
The appendix is composed of the Polhill family line.

I. CAPTAIN GEORGE REID, born December 23, 1719 in Ireland - died November 13, 1786 in Abbeville, South Carolina, married Abigail Leger, born in France, about 1735* Six children were born to this union: Rosa; ANN (NANCY), born 17h7 - died 1805; Margaret; Samuel; Alexander: and Joseph.
II. Rosa Reid married Major John Bovrie. The Bowie Line is available by- writing Mrs. James H. Austin in Abbeville, South Carolina.
II. ANN (NANCY) REID, born 17h7 - died 1805, married CAPTAIN WILLIAM BASKIN, JR., born 1737 - died 1 79ii . on January 12, 1769.
II. Margaret Reid married twice. Her first marriage was to Hugh Reid.
Her second marriage was to William Cander Baskin.
II. Samuel Reid married Caroline Thomson.
II. Joseph Reid, a Lieutenant, was bom on June 5, 1756 in Virginia (?). He married Isabella Baskin. They had one child, Margaret, who married her cousin, William Cander Baskin.
The Baskin family came from Ireland and settled on the Juniata
(Juanetta) River in Pennsylvania. From, there they went to the Shenandoah
Valley, Virginia, near the Old Stone Church. They then moved to Abbeville
County, South Carolina.
I. WILLIAM BASKIN married Mary Stuart who was born in Virginia. Six children were born to this union: Hugh: Charles; James; George; WILLIAM, JR., born 1737 - died 179h; and Thomas.
William, Hugh, and James Baskin served in the same company in the Revolutionary War. William was a Captain while Hugh and James were a Lieutenant and Sergeant respectively.
II. Hugh Baskin was listed in the first South Carolina census in 1790.
II. Charles Baskin married Mary Craig in 1765. They had a child named John. This family lived in Virginia.
II. James Baskin married in 1766 to Prudence
II. WILLIAM BASKIN, JR., born 1737 - died 179li , married ANN (NANCY) REID, born 17li7 - died 1805, on January 12, 1769. William Baskin, Jr., was a Captain.

I. JAMES WASHINGTON HARKNESS, SR., born July 9, 1780 in Abbeville County. South Carolina - died July 9, 1851 in Butts County, Georgia, married ROSANNAH BASKIN, born March 17, 1776 - died August 9, l81jCUin Butts County, Georgia, on June 1, 1801. Nine children were born to this union: John B. Harkness; Ann Harkness Price, born March 28, 1805 - died February 2, 1891 in Jasper County, Georgia; William Baskin Harkness, born 1808 - died 1882; Rosannah Harkness Nutt, born 1809 - died 1879; James ’Washington Harkness, Jr., born December 22, 1812 in Morgan County, Georgia - died October 20, 1902 in Jackson, Georgia; Thomas Marion Harkness, born May 8, 181U - died January 27, 1886;
Mary E. Harkness Pettigrew, born October 17, 1817 - died December 8, 1903; Robert W. Harkness; and Peggy Harkness Gilbert.
Robert W. Harkness moved to Alabama. No information concerning his family is available.
After their marriage on June 1, 1801, James W. Harkness and Rosannah Baskin Harkness moved to Morgan County, Georgia, from South Carolina. Here he enlisted in the War of 1812. He was a lieutenant, 286 Dist., Morgan County, Georgia (Aug. 6,
1812) . He served in Capt. Thomas Coleman's Company (Nov. 10,
1813) . They later moved to Butts County, Georgia, a little above the Asa Buttrill place.
James W. Harkness, Sr. 's father was believed to be ’William and must have been in the Revolutionary War. The following was found in the Baskin notes: "Brother-in-law, Harkness, was a member of the 'The Rangers', Capt. Bell's Company" .
Peggy Harkness Gilbert lived on a farm at Fairfield, not far from Jackson, Georgia, where they had a family burial ground. Here her father and mother were buried but this has all been destroyed according to family records.
II. J0HN B. HARKNESS married Elizabeth Ann Tucker on January 3, 18U1. Three children were born to this union: Benjamin Franklin, John, and James Alexander. Benjamin Franklin Harkness and John Harkness died as young men.

JOHN B. HAMNESS' second marriage was to Elizabeth Hunter. One child was born to this union: Ella Elizabeth Harkness flam, born September 10, 1855 in Butts County, Georgia - died April 9, 1911 in Monroe County, Georgia.
III. JAMES ALEXANDER HARKNESS married Mary Caroline Seymour. One child was born to this union: Mary Caroline Harkness Barfield, born Feb¬ ruary 7, 1868 in Spalding County, Georgia.
Mary Caroline Seymour Harkness was buried in the old Edwards Family cemetery near Luella, Georgia. Her grave is not narked.

JAMES ALEXANDER HARKNESS ' third marriage was to Nancy (Nannie ) Fortson. Eight children were born to this union: John, Fortson, Ralph, Bob, Jim, Willis, Wilbur, and Helen. No information is available concerning this family group.
James Alexander Harkness and Nancy (Nannie) Fortson Harkness are both buried in Tampa, Florida.

MARY CAROLINE HARKNESS, born February 7, 1868 in Spalding County, Georgia, married James Madison Barfield*, born July 11, 1859 in Spalding County, Georgia - died March 27, 1919 in Spalding County, Oeorgia, on September Li, 188U. Eight children were born to this union: Wilson Pullin Barfield j Henry Arnold Barfield; William Ernest Barfield; John Robert Barfield; Ruby Lucile Barfield, born November 30, 1895 in Spalding County, Georgia; James Harkness Barfield; Frank Adams Barfield; and Martha Evelyn Barfield Wilson.
V. WILSON PULLIN BARFIELD**, born September Hi, 1886 in Spalding County, Georgia - died November 6, 1935 in Spalding County, Georgia, married Marion Patrick Manley, born April 6, 1886, on June 19, 1907. No child¬ ren were born to this union.

Haircnock, Jr., who fell in a well near Sunny Side about two weeks ago, sustain¬ ing serious injuries, died at the Griffin Hospital Saturday (March ii). He is survived by his wife and two children and his father, C. V. Hammock. The funeral services were held Sunday at Union Church, con¬ ducted by Rev. I. G. Walker. The Griffin Kerchantile Company had charge of the interment.

JAMES MADISON BARFIELD (1859 - 1919) - GRIFFIN DAILY- NEWS, Griffin, Georgia, March 27, 1919 - James M. Barfield died at his home at Sunny- Side Thursday afternoon (March 27). He had been in declining health for aeveral months and for the past ten days had been confined to his bed.
Mr. Barfield was one of Spalding County's best known citizens and a man of splendid character. He had scores of friends throughout the county who will be grieved to hear of his death. He was about sixty years of age and leaves a wife, six sons, and two daughters to mourn hie loss and cherish his memory.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
WILSON PULLIN BARFIELD (1886 - 1935-) - GRIFFIN DAILY NEWS, Griffin, Georgia, November 7, 1935 - Mr* Wilson P. Barfield, well known Spalding County citizen, died suddenly Wednesday night (Nov. 6) at his home near here after suffering a stroke about 7 p.m. He was U9 years of age.
Mr. Barfield was born and reared in Spalding County and was tne son of Mrs. J. M. Barfield and the late J. M. Barfield, pioneer residents of the county. He married Miss Marion Manley, member of another well known Spalding family.
Mr. Barfield had been a bus driver for the Spalding County Schools for the past five years, since Spalding High School was founded.
Funeral services will be held Friday at the Berea Christian Church in Hampton. Rev. G. Y. Smith, of Atlanta, will officiate. Interment will be in the Berea cemetery with Frank S. Pittman, funeral director, in charge.
JOHN ROBERT BARFIELD (1893 - 1955) - GRIFFIN DAILY NEWS, Griffin,
Georgia, July 27, 1955 - Mr. John Robert Barfield, Sr., 62, of Rt. Five, Griffin, died at his home at noon yesterday. He was a member of the Damascus Christian Church and was born and reared in Spalding County.
Mr. Barfield was one of the first school bus operators in Spalding County. He was maintenance supervisor of the Griff in-Spalding County School System at the time of his death.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon from Haisten Chapel. The Rev. 0. Highsmith and the Rev. Idus Barnette will officiate. Burial will be in Berea Cemetery at Hampton, Georgia.
JAMIE FRANK TURNER BARFIELD (1895 - 1956) - GRIFFIN DAILY NEWS, Griffin, Georgia, October 19, 1956 - Mrs. Jamie Turner Barfield, widow of the late Mr. John R. Barfield, died early this morning in a private hospital where she had been a patient for several years.
She was born in Hampton, Ga., and for the past several years had made her home in the Vineyard Community. She was a member of the Damascus Christian Church.

DONALD WILSON BARFIELD (1931 - 1916) - GRIFFIN DAILY NEWS, Griffin, Georgia, March 25, 19b6 - Wilson Barfield, lli, son of Mr. and Mrs.
John Robert Barfield, Vineyard, was killed Saturday night (March 23) when struck by an automobile. Young Barfield was on his way home from Griffin. He got off a Greyhound bus at Doe's Crossing and was struck by an automobile driven by Richard Cosey, of Savannah, recently dis¬ charged from the service.
Highway patrolmen investigated and did not make a case. Cosey did not attempt to leave the scene of the accident and after Barfield had been taken to the hospital he called at the Barfield home to express his regrets and to offer to do whatever he could.
Young Barfield was a popular member of the freshman class at Spalding High School.
Funeral services were held this afternoon from the Berea Christian Church, Hampton. Rev. Gerald Smith, pastor, officiated. Six classmates formed an honorary escort. Frank S. Pittman, funeral director, was in charge of arrangements.
JAMES HARKNESS BARFIELD (1898 - 1952) - ATLANTA JOURNAL- CONSTITUTION, Atlanta, Georgia - BIRMINGHAM, Ala., April 26 - The Rev. James H. Barfield, Sh, died unexpectedly Tuesday (April 23, 1952) in Atmore,
Ala. Funeral services were held Friday at Norwood Chapel. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery here.
Mr. Barfield, a native of Georgia, for several years was pastor of the Woodlawn Christian Church. Later he taught school in the Jefferson County system and at Eastman, Ga. At the time of his death, he was with the Jack Laurel Advertising Co., Birmingham. He received his education at Southeastern Christian College, Auburn, Ga., Birmingham-Southern, and Vanderbilt University.
ELLA PEARL HAM McELROY (1876 - 1936) - Taken from a newspaper clipping. - Mrs. J. P. Me Elroy, an esteemed and popular Monroe County citizen, passed away at her home Nonday (Dec. 27, 1936). She was 60 years of age and her death was the result of an attack of pneumonia.
The funeral was conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Forsyth (Ga.) Methodist Church by Rev. T. R. Kendall and interment was in the Forsyth cemetery. The arrangements were in charge of the Bramblett Funeral Home.

WILLIAM WALTER WYNN, JR. (1919- ) - William Walter Wynn, Jr., was born
on October Hi , 1919 in Monroe County, Georgia, to Willie Mae Ham Wynn and William Walter \fynn.
He entered the United States Army on March 10, 1939, departing from the United States for the Philippines on June 1, 19U0 and saw action on Bataan with the 31st United States Infantry as a Platoon Sergeant. Mr. Wynn was captured on April 9, 19U2 and started on the Death March which lasted from April 15 until April 27, 19U2. From April 27, 19L2 until July 9, 19b3, he stayed in two prisoner of war camps in the Philippines - Camp O'Donnell and Cabanatuan Camp. He was moved to Japan in July of 19U3 and was liberated at Nagasaki, Japan, on September 1, 19^5, arriving back in the United States on November 1, 19U5*
On August 9, 19h6, he married Bennie Carroll Jenkins who was bom on February 23, 1929 in Monroe County, Georgia. They have one child: Shirley Jean Wynn, born on April 5, 19U9 at Perry, Georgia.
Mr. Wynn entered the United States Air Force on August 26, 19U6 as a First Sergeant. He served in Germany from April 1$, 1953 until April 19, 1951.
He is now (1955) a Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force atationed at Charleston, South Carolina.
JAKES COOK HUGGINS (died 19lib) - Taken from a newspaper clipping. - James Cook Huggins of McKenzie, Ala., is reported by the War Department to have been killed in action in France on July 7th ( 19LiU ) . An employe of the Royster Guano Co. in Montgomery for five years prior to his in¬ duction into the armed forces on Oct. 23, 19hl.
Huggins leaves a wife the former Mary Elizabeth Smith, and a daughter Eugenia Helen Huggins, in addition to his parents Mr. and Mrs. James Clark Huggins, all of McKenzie.
Before going overseas in February of this year, he served at Camp Croft, S. C.; Ft. 3enning, Georgia: Ft. Jackson, S. C.; and Camp Atter-
bury, Ind. He was a graduate of the McKenzie High School.
A memorial service will be held for him at the McKenzie Methodist Church Sunday August llith.

circle of friends, was the death of Mr. Z. F. Harkness which occurred
Tuesday morning (Dec. 11). Death was sudden and was due to appoplexy, it was said.
Mr. Harkness was one of Butts County's leading citizens. He was held In universal high esteem for his honesty, integrity, and sterling character. Mr. Harkness was 76 years old and served in the War Between The States as a member of Co. A, 30th Georgia Regiment. He was a member of the Jackson Presbyterian Church.
The funeral services were held at the home Thursday morning, Rev.

SALLIE CAMP HARKNESS (1850-1928) - JACKSON PROGRESS- ARGUS , Jackson, Georgia, August 10, 1928 - Following a stroke of paralysis suffered a few days ago, Mrs. Sallie Harkness, widow of the late Mr. Z. F. Harkness, passed away at her home a few miles from Jackson Saturday afternoon (August Li).
Born August 3, 1850, Mrs. Harkness was 78 years and one day old.
She was born and reared in Butts County, the daughter of Mr. Nathan Camp, a well known Confederate soldier who lost his life at the battle of Murfreesboro, Tenn. Her husband, the late Mr. Z. F. Harkness, was a well known citizen and prominent Confederate veteran. She was a devoted member of the Fellowship Presbyterian Church.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Fellowship Church, with Rev. Julian Warner officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
LEIGHTON M. HARKNESS (1868-1939) - JACKSON PROGRESS- ARGUS, Jackson, Georgia, August 3, 1939 - Funeral services for Mr. Leighton M. Harkness, 71 years of age, former Butts County citizen whose death occurred Tues¬ day night (Aug. 1) in Miami, Fla., will be held at Fellowship Church Friday afternoon. Rev. E. L. Daniel will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Harkness, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Z. F. Harkness, was born and reared in Butts County and lived here until 20 years ago when he moved to Miami. He was connected with prominent families of the county and was a member of the Methodist Church.
SAMUEL JEFFERSON FOSTER (1873-1935) - JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS, Jackson, Georgia, March 8, 1935 - Coming as a profound shock to the family and hosts of friends was the death of Judge S. J. Foster, clerk of Butts Superior Court since 1911, which came suddenly and unexpectedly in the Crawford W. Long Hospital in Atlanta Monday morning (March L).
Samuel Jefferson Foster was born Feb. 20, 1873 a son of William J. and Susannah McKibben Foster, among the early settlers of Towaliga District. His father came from Ireland and settled in the county soon after it was created in 1825. Mis family has played an important part in the upbuilding of the county.
He attended the North Georgia Agricultural College at Dahl onega, his class including several prominent Georgians. Judge Foster was a member of the Fellowship Presbyterian Church and he supported all religious activities liberally. He possessed a likeable personality and was a true and tested friend. His advice and counsel was early sought and he was admired for his conservative stand on all quostions.
Judge Foster was equally well known as a civic leader. He was pres¬ ident of the Butts County Fair Association and head of the Butts County Centennial Committee in 1925 when Butts County celebrated its one hundredth anniversary.
In the realm of education Judge Foster took a leading and progressive part. Ik* was formerly a member of the Butts County Board of Education, and served for several years as a member of the Jackson Board of Educa¬ tion. Education always found in Judge Foster a stalwart champion and a

devoted friend.
On Nov. 10, 1911 Judge Foster was elected clerk of Butts Superior Ccurt, winning the office in a field of three candidates, to succeed Judge B. P. Bailey whose death occurred on Oct. 10, 1911. Filling the unexpired term so capably, Judge Foster had been continued in office for twenty-four years.
Funeral services were held at the Jackson Presbyterian Church Wednesday morning. Rev. E. L. Daniel conducted the impressive services In the presence of a large assemblance. Interment was in the family lot in Fellowship cemetery.
SARA CORRINE FOSTER (1906-1956) - JACKSON PROGRESS- ARGUS, Jackson,
Georgia, August 23, 1956 - Funeral services for Miss Sara Corrine Foster, 50, were held Wednesday afternoon in the Jackson Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kirk Nesbit, Rev. G. A. Briggs, and Rev. Lamar Watkins officiating. Interment was in Fellowship cemetery under the direction of Haisten Funeral Home.
Miss Foster died early Tuesday morning (Aug. 21) at an Atlanta hospital after a brief illness.
One of the county's best known and popular officials, she was elected Clerk of the Butts Superior Court on May 15, 1935 to fill the unexpired term of her father, the late Judge S. J. Foster, and in 1936 was reelected to fill a full four- year term.
Her conduct of the affairs of that important office were marked by i high degree of devotion to duty and capable and obliging service.
Grand juries frequently commended her for the neatness and accuracy of the records kept by her office.
She was a member of the Fellowship Presbyterian Church and was active In the support of its causes.
THELMA LEVERRETT DICK (1921-1956) - JACKSON PROGRESS- ARGUS, Jackson, Georgia, May 2h, 1956 - Funeral services for Mrs. Herbert Dick, who died Monday morning (May 21) of a heart attack at her home in Spartan¬ burg, S. C., were held Wednesday morning at the Jackson I'resbyterian Church with the Rev. Wade H. Bell, Jr., pastor, and the Rev. Kirk Nesbit officiating. Mrs. Dick, the former Kiss Thelma Leverrett. was born in Jackson on January 25, 1921 and was a graduate of the Jackson High class of 1938.
She was a member of the Jackson Presbyterian Church. She had lived in Spartanburg for approximately 10 months.
GEORGE CAMP HARKNESS (1879-19LM - JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS, Jackson, Georgia, March 30, 19bU - George Camp Harkness, 6L years of age, well known resident of Butts County, died in a Griffin hospital Saturday night (March 25) after a serious illness of several weeks.
He was the son of the late Zack Harkness and Mrs. Mary Thaxton Harkness, prominent residents of Butts County. Mr. Harkness was a successful planter and actively identified with all progressive movements.
He was an elder of the Fellowship Presbyterian Church and took a leading part in religious affairs.

JOHN SINGLETON ROBISON (1906-1951 ) - JACKSON PROGRESS- ARGUS, Jackson, Georgia, March 8, 1951 - Impressive and largely attended funeral services for John Singleton Robison, hh, were held at the Jackson Methodist Church Sunday. Rev. Walter Styles, pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Valdese, N. C., and former Jackson and Fellowship pastor, Rev. Ralph Shea of the Jackson Methodist Church, were the officiating ministers, assisted by Rev. Richard Scoggins, a former pastor at Fellowship and Jackson and now pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Panama City, Fla. Burial was in Jackson cemetery with Haisten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Robison was killed late Friday (March 2) in a hunting accident. Born May 12, 1906 in Jackson where he spent his entire life, Mr. Robison was a son of Mrs. Florrie Hammond Robison and the late Mr. E.
C. Robison, connected with leading Georgia families. After completing his education at Jackson High School, he engaged in a business career and for many years had been manager of the farm department of Robison, Settle and Robison, Inc.
An enthusiastic sportsman, Mr. Robison spent much of his leisure time in hunting. He was a member of the Jackson Methodist Church, St. Johns Lodge of Masons, Alexius Ccmmandery of Knights Templar, and of the Shrine.
THOMAS BAKER FLETCHER (1870-1929) - JACKSON PROGRESS -ARGUS, Jackson, Georgia, September 13, 1929 - Funeral services for Mr. Thomas Baker Fletcher, aged 59, one of Butts County's most prominent citizens, who died at his home near Jackson Thursday night, Sept. 5> were held Sunday morning at England's Chapel. The services were conducted by Rev. E. C. Wilson, pastor of the Forsyth Methodist Church and a former member pastor at England's Chapel and Jenkinsburg, assisted by Rev. V. 0. Gentry, pastor of the Jenkinsburg Methodist Church, and Dr. L. M. Twiggs, pre¬ siding elder of the Griffin District. Interment was in the Jackson City Cemetery. Death was attributed to heart trouble.
Mr. Fletcher was a loyal member of the Jenkinsburg Masonic Lodge.
He enjoyed the distinction of being one of middle Georgia's best farmers and a year or two ago was nominated for the honor of a Master Farmer in the contest conducted by the Progressive Farmer. Into his farm he had put his best thought and effort and his success with cover and soil improvement crops made his farm a popular place to study improved methods. He was generally conceded to be Butts County's best ail round farmer.
Born in Butts County September lh, 1870, Mr. Fletcher was in his fifty-ninth year. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William H. Fletcher, pioneer residents of the county and connected with leading middle Georgia families. He was married in 189L to Miss Annie Crawford and September 6 marked the thirty-fifth anniversary of their marriage.

CHESTER BRYAN HARRIS, JR. (1920- 19U3) - JACKSON PROGRESS- ARGUS, Jackson, Georgia - Bryan Harris, 22 years of age, son of Kr. and Mrs. C. B. Harris of Jenkinsburg and serving with the United States Navy recruiting station at Gainesville, was killed instantly about 1 o'clock Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 23, 19U3) when the jeep in which he was riding turned over on the highway near Gainesville. The accident occurred when something went wrong with the steering gear, causing the jeep to turn turtle. Two other service nen in the jeep were seriously injured.
The eldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Harris, he was graduated in 1939 from the Jackson High School where he was a popular member of the basket- bail team. He enlisted in the Navy several months ago and was a valued
camber of Uncle Sam's sea forces. He was a member of the Methodist Church
and had scores of friends who are saddened by the tragedy.
Funeral services were held at the Jenkinsburg Methodist Church
Thursday morning with Rev. E. W. McDougai officiating. There was an escort from the U. S. Navy and the casket was draped with the United States flag.
Burial was in the family lot in the Jenkinsburg cemetery.
ALAN BAKER FLETCHER (1936-195D - JACKSON PROGRESS- ARGUS, Jackson,
Georgia - A fall from a truck in which a group of teen-age beys had attended a baseball game Saturday afternoon (Aug. 11, 1951) proved fatal to Alan Baker Fletcher, lli-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fletcher.
The accident occurred near the home of the lad's parents. When the cut-down truck ran over a rock it threw Alan out of the vehicle and his head hit a rock in the road. After the injury, the youth was given emergency treatment by a Jackson doctor and then was rushed to the Orif fin- Spalding County Hospital where he was pronounced dead soon after arrival.
He was born September 3, 1936 and would have attained his 15th birth¬ day next month. A student in the Jackson High School he would have been a member of the tenth grade this fall.
Funeral services were held at England's Chapel Church Tuesday with Rev. W. C. Bowen of Augusta and Rev. J. R. Thompson officiating. Burial was in the family lot in the Jackson cemetery with Haisten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
WILLIAM MASTON HARKNESS (1850-193M - JACKSON PROGRESS- ARGUS. Jackson, Georgia, January 12, 193U - Mr. William Kaston Harkness, 83 years of age, one of the county's most prominent citizens, died at his home here Sunday morning (Jan. 7). Death resulted after an illness of several weeks. He suffered from heart trouble.
Born in Butts County Dec. 22, 1850, Kr. Harkness was connected with influential families of this section. He was a son of the late Mr. W.
B. Harkness, and his mother was a Miss Faulkner, of Jasper County. He was a nephew of the late Judge James W. Harkness, leading Butts County resident. He was a member of the Jackson Methodist Church. His life was marked by upright business dealings and loyalty to his friends.
Funeral services were held at the Jackson Methodist Church Monday morning, with the pastor, Rev. R. P. Etheridge, officiating. Interment was in the Jackson City Cemetery.

NANCY EMMA POPE HARKNESS (1862-1953) - JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS, Jackson, Georgia, November 26, 1953 - Mrs. Eirana Pope Harkness, 91, widow of the late Mr. W. M. Harkness of Jackson, died November 19 in Atlanta. She had long been in feeble health.
Born in Jasper County of a prominent middle Georgia family, Mrs. Harkness after her marriage resided here for several years before going to Atlanta for permanent residence. She was the last member of her family her brother, the late Mr. S. M. Pope, having died some years ago. She was a member of the Methodist Church. The Harkness family has long been influential in affairs of Butts County.
Committment services were held at the Jackson cemetery Saturday with Dr. Nat G. Long officiating. Burial was in the family lot under the direction of H. M. Patterson it Son.
EMILY HARKNESS COLLINS (l88b-195U) - JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS, Jackson, Georgia, October lli , 195U - Mrs. Ermie Harkness Collins, wife of W. H. Collins, died in Jacksonville, Fla., on September 30 as the result of an illness of several weeks. Funeral services were held in Jacksonville October 2.
Born in Butts County, Mrs. Collins was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Harkness. The family has resided in Jacksonville several years. Many relatives live in this section.
IRIS AUBREY ROBERTS (1899-19U91 - ATLANTA JOURNAL, Atlanta, Georgia - Funeral services for I. A. (Bob) Roberts, 50, vice-president and general manager of the Gulf-Atlantic Warehouse Co. in Atlanta and Memphis, were held Friday at Spring Hill. Dr. Nat G. Long officiated. The body was sent to Jackson for burial. Mr. Roberts died Wednesday night (Oct. 19, 19U9) at his home, 2691 Boulevard dr., S. E.
For the past 17 years Mr. Roberts had been associated with the Gulf-Atlantic Co. here, in Memphis and Greenville, S. C. He formerly was with the Southern Railway system in Atlanta and Charlotte, N. C,, for about 18 years.
Mr. Roberts was .well known throughout the cotton industry. He was a member of the National Cotton Council and the National Cotton Compress and Warehouse Association.
A Georgian most of his life, he was a native of Woolsey and had lived in Atlanta many years before moving to Memphis about two years ago. He had been in Atlanta since his illness began about eight weeks ago.
Mr. Roberts was a member of the Peachtree Road Methodist Church in Atlanta and the Tennessee Club in Memphis.
MARY JANE NUTT MOORE (1828-1901) - THE JACKSON RECORD, Jackson, Oeorgia, October 25, 1901 - Mrs. Moore, widow of the late Col. John L. Moore, and mother of Mrs. J. M. Crawford, died at the heme of Mr. Charlie Nutt, near Eastman, last Tuesday (Oct. 22), and her remains were brought to this place and interred in the Jackson cemetery Thursday morning after funeral ceremonies at the Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Nelson.
Mrs. Kooro left Sheriff Crawford's home a fow days ago enjoying her usual good health to visit relatives in South Oeorgia and was

stopping for a short while with Mr. Nutt and while writing a letter to Mrs. Crawford she was stricken with apoplexy and after living two hours in an tinconscious state passed on into the great beyond.
Mrs. Moore was the daughter of the late William Nutt, Sr., and was raised after early childhood at the place where Capt. W. F. Smith now resides. She was 7li years of age and leaves one daughter and four sons besides numerous other relatives and friends to mourn her departure.
She had long been a devoted member of the Baptist Church and was always regarded as one of the best of women. The Record extends sympathy.
HENRY McINTOSH MOORE (1887-1953) - Taken from newspaper clipping, Thomas- ville, Georgia, December 30, 1953 - After a lengthly illness Dr. Henry McIntosh Moore died last night (Dec. 29) at his home on Remington Avenue, as a direct result of a heart attack, superinduced by his previous illness .
Funeral arrangements are in charge of Whiddon's Funeral Home and will be held tomorrow afternoon from the home. Rev. William McKay will officiate .
Dr. Moore was born in Thomasville May 11, 1887, son of James Willis and Octavia Stone Moore. He was married in New York City to Miss Marguerite Vining on July lh, 1917, while he was in the service in World War I. He came to Thomasville after his service for his country and after spending a short time in Boston.
He has been in active practice of medicine as a specialist in eye, ears, nose, and throat in Thomasville for thirty-four years and was well known throughout this section. He attended the University of Georgia and the Atlanta College of Physicians and Surgeons.
For many years Dr. Moore took an active interest in business and professional life in this community. His active war service was followed by leadership in the T. L. Spence, Jr., Post of the American Legion of which he was at one time commander. He was a prominent member of the Thomas County Medical Society, a director of the Commercial Bank and the Thomasville Ice Co. His church affiliation was Presbyterian. He was a member of the Housing Authority of Thomasville and also the local Lodge of Elks.
MARY LUCILE NUTT TURNER (1879-1956) - JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS, Jackson, Georgia, January 19, 1956 - Funeral services for Mrs. Mary N. Turner,
76, who died Tuesday (Jan. 17) in a Macon Hospital, will be held Thursday in the First Baptist Church with Rev. G. A. Briggs officiating. Death came to Mrs. Turner following a severe stroke about 10 days ago that left her paralyzed and in a semi-conscious condition.
Born in Jackson, she was the daughter of the late William P. Nutt and Mrs. Annie Lee Ham Nutt. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Interment was in the Jackson cemetery under the direction of Peacock and Ball Funeral Home .
WILLIAM MAURICE MALLET (181*5-1900) - JACKSON ARGUS, Jackson, Georgia, December 21, 1900 - Jackson was hushed into silence and sadness last Saturday morning (Dec. 15) when it was announced that William M. Mallet
was dead. Mr. Mallet had been sick for only a few days, having been attacked with a congestive chill a few days before, and he was dead before many of our people knew he was sick, and the announcement came in the nature of a surprise and shock to all.
The deceased was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, about £6 years ago. He came to Georgia when quite a lad, running a candy and fruit stand at Indian Springs. He developed an aptness for business that was remarkable. Later in life he was associated in business with "Uncle" Harold Byars. In late years he has been an extensive dealer in and man¬ ufacturer of commercial fertilizers. He has also been recognized as the largest farmer in the county, and was at the time of his death managing the interests of the Jackson Oil Mill Co. In the conduct of his private business Mr. Mallet was wise in the selection of his heads of departments.
He was chairman of the county board of education for years and was a splendid man for the place. He has also served the city with faithful¬ ness and distinction for years as a member of the board of trustees of Jackson Institute, and at the time of his death was chairman of the board of county commissioners, and a better officer never lived.
He was a member of the Methodist Church and had been a faithful and efficient steward in that church.
The pastor of the church, Rev. R. B. 0. England, conducted in the funeral exercises. The other pastors of the city also joined in the exercises which occurred at the Methodist Church Sunday afternoon in the presence of a tremendous concourse of people from all walks of life. At the grave the rites of the Masonic lodge were conducted, and all that was mortal of a most useful citizen was laid to rest.
William Maurice Mallet served in the War Between The States with Company G, 3rd Georgia Reserves from May of 186U until April of 186$.
He was wounded in South Carolina in December of 186U.
